The Theme Of Loneliness In Of Mice And Men - 816 Words

John Steinbeck was an American novelist who lived during the 1900’s. He was born in the Salinas River Valley and lived through the Great Depression. He dropped out of college to pursue his passion for writing. In 1937, he wrote Of Mice and Men, one of his more serious novellas. In his novella, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses the characters Crooks, Curleys wife, and Candy to contribute to the overall theme of loneliness. To begin, Steinbeck uses Crooks, the stable hand who is discriminated against, to contribute to the theme of loneliness. Crooks is so highly discriminated against because he is the only black man on the ranch, and is tired of being by himself all the time. Crooks explains, â€Å"Spose you didnt have nobody...A guy†¦show more content†¦Candy’s only companion is a very old dog, who is shot in the head one night by Carlson, a bitter and mean farmworker. Candy says, Id make a will an leave my share to you guys in case I kick off, cause I aint got no relatives or nothing†¦ (Candy 59). This quote demonstrates another example of the pervasive theme of loneliness. Candy wants a companion so badly that he will give these strangers, Lennie and George, all of his money just so he does not have to be alone anymore. Subsequently, Steinbeck uses Curleys wife, the woman married to the Bosss son, to contribute to the theme of loneliness. Curley pays very little attention to his wife. As a result, she goes around talking to the other guys on the farm. The problem with this is Curley gets mad when she talks to anyone else besides him. Curleys wife explains, I get lonely†¦ You can talk to people, but I cant talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. Howd you like not to talk to anybody? (Curleys wife 87). This quote demonstrates the intense loneliness she feels when she states that Curley tries to seclude her from everyone so he can have her all to himself.
